Frequently Asked Questions
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (the premolars and molars) to prevent tooth decay. The sealants bond into the pits and fissures of the teeth, forming a shield over each tooth.
Although brushing and flossing are the best ways to remove food particles from the teeth and prevent cavities, they can’t always reach the nooks and crannies of the back teeth. Applying sealants helps protect these vulnerable parts and seal out tooth decay.
Dental sealants can last several years before they are reapplied. During your regular dental checkups, your dentist will ascertain the condition of the sealant and reapply them as deemed fit. Many studies have indicated that they are very effective in helping prevent decay on chewing surfaces.
First, your dentist will clean and dry your tooth before placing an acidic gel on the fissured part of your teeth. The gel roughens your tooth surface to enable a strong bond between your tooth and the sealants.
After a few seconds, your dentist will wash off the gel and dry your tooth before applying the sealant onto your teeth grooves. A special blue light is then used to toughen the sealant.
Dental sealants in the University Charlotte area are regarded as preventative dental care, and they vary in cost per tooth. However, your dental insurance plan may cover this service wholly or partially. At Winning Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we work hand-in-hand with many insurance companies.
