During your appointment, your dental hygienist uses tools to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and along the gum line. X-rays may be taken to show the underlying structures of your mouth. Your dentist will assess your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay and gum disease. 

Regular dental exams are part of maintaining optimal oral health. These appointments complement and further your oral hygiene habits between visits to ensure you have healthy teeth and a beautiful smile.

A routine teeth cleaning usually takes 30-60 minutes in our dental office. For patients who are not prone to issues and who maintain good brushing and flossing habits, appointments require less time. 

However, patients who are prone to gum disease or decay, may require a more involved deep clean. A deep teeth cleaning may require 1-2 visits to clean all parts of the mouth. Also called root scaling and planing, these treatments involve cleaning and polishing the roots to protect against decay and disease.

In many cases, a regular dental exam is considered preventative dental care. This service may be covered in part or whole by your dental insurance plan. Generally, routine cleanings are scheduled every six months. Patients who are at a higher risk of decay or gum disease may require more frequent visits.

Routine dental care helps to prevent many unnecessary dental emergencies caused by decay and damage that could be treated early. For example, a small cavity that is detected early can be treated with a filling before a root canal is needed.
